ONCE AGAIN - Vintage Rider Night on Thursday

Vintage Night is Thursday Night at the Vancouver Motorcycle Show.  Tonight we pay tribute to the Golden Age of motorcycle racing.

We kick the official part of the evening off with the Café Racer’s Cup which features beautifully restored race bikes from the ‘1930's through the ‘1970s all competing for bragging rights as this year’s Café Racers Cup Champion.

Following the race, head up to the Ironhorse Lounge for our Seminar Series; we will introduce you to Peter Starr, a pioneer in the motorcycling film industry and the producer of Take It To The Limit, the iconic motorcycle racing movie that starred the world’s most phenomenal riders including Steve Baker, Kenny Roberts, Mike Hailwood, Roger DeCoster, Barry Sheene and many more.  Peter and his special guest, World Champion Steve Baker, will take you back to the golden age of motorcycle sports and bring you along for the ride of a lifetime, as they discuss racing around the world and what went into the making of the movie.

We also have the movie on the screen, Take It To the Limit – see Clips from the famous movie, and check out Peter’s new book, Taking It To The Limit - all about the making of Take It To The Limit both on and off the track.  Critics have described this book as “a staggering, epochal work of extraordinary dimensions” and “a time capsule of motorcycling history that deserves a place on any moto-buff’s shelf.”

If after all this you are motivated to come out and race vintage yourself, please meet last year’s Café Racers Cup champion Alex “the Chilliwack Kid” Dumitru who will discuss how you can get involved in Vintage Racing and the British Motorcycle Owner’s Club own Robert Smith who will be talking about touring on a classic bike, as well as the Club and how you can be involved.  Before you leave the show you will want to check out the British Motorcycle Owner’s Club Display with their tribute to the Isle of Man TT and our own Westwood Pioneers.

Ironhorse Beer Sample for those guests 18 years of age or above, compliments of Pacific Western Brewing Co.

Stick around till the seminars are finished and we’ll have a draw for our Grand Prize and other great prizes. This year our Grand Prize is a pair of Wesco Boots and a Best Western Travel Card – for comfort on the road and at the end of the Ride!  Plus we have some other great prizes including a copy of Taking It To The Limit, a Destination Highways Book – the must have book for motorcycle touring, an HBC Travel Card from Megson Fitzpatrick and more.

Steve Baker
World Champion
Born in Bellingham, Washington, on September 5, 1952 Steve Baker began riding motorcycles at age 11. By the late 1960s, while he was still in high school, he was racing the local dirt tracks.  Because the American Motorcycle Association did not allow a kid that young to get a racing license Steve Baker got his early racing done north of the border, in Canada. He was a quick learner and a quick rider winning on tracks at Cloverdale, New Westminster and Callister Park in Vancouver. By 1970 he was points champion in the 125 and 250 c.c. classes in the Vancouver area.

Steve says his first bike was a Yamaha and the brand stayed with him for most of his racing career. He rode Yamahas on the dirt tracks and when he was 18 years old he raced for Trev Deeley, then the Yamaha distributor for Canada.  His road racing experiences got him three Canadian titles from 1974 through to 1976. In 1975, at Westwood, Steve Baker won the Unlimited, 250 and 500 c.c. races and set a lap record for motorcycles at 1:10.4.  1977 saw Steve Baker win the rain-shortened Daytona 200. In Europe he raced 750 and 500 c.c. Yamahas becoming world champion in the 750 series and second in the 500 grand prix series.

As a privateer in 1978 Steve Baker’s motorcycle career came to an end on a Suzuki at Mosport. A bad crash and more broken bones decided that for him. He bought a motorcycle dealership in his hometown of Bellingham and was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999.  These days he is involved in “classic motorcycle parading” back over in England and Europe on his favourite bike: Yamaha. As he says, “Yamaha is part of me”.
