Susan Van Luyn
Stop Saying "Someday" and Get Going Today!
Susan is a 43 year old mother of two teens who got her motorcycle licence 2 years ago. (This year will be her third year on the road). Her first experience with bikes was trying to ride “off-road” on a dirtbike in her late teens/early 20’s When her kids were little, they all got dirt-bikes. She was riding a Yamaha TW200 at the time and quite enjoyed the freedom and challenge of learning how to ride. She loved that bike.
As time wore on, the dirt-bikes saw less dirt and more sitting, so her husband decided to sell them. Susan continued to enjoy her passenger rides, but hubby got more and more itchy for her to get her own wheels. After years of discussing getting her own bike, she finally agreed to try a scooter. She had no doubts about her ability, since she now had experience in the dirt, however, the thought of being so exposed and vulnerable in traffic really un-nerved her. The scooter offered an inexpensive way to try two wheeled transport on for size.
Within a couple of months Susan felt comfortable on the road, so the next step was obvious… to find a bike AND a motorcycle school. The Vancouver motorcycle show was the perfect venue to check out the bikes and schools. The rest is history. Open Road was the school of choice for many reasons, and a second hand, Kawasaki Ninja 250 became Susan's trusted mount. That year-2010-, after getting her licence,Susan and her husband did a circle tour from Chilliwack through Whistler, Duffy Lake Road, and back home through the Fraser Canyon. It was awesome! In 2011 it was the Sunshine Coast in a group ride, and up to 100 Mile on her own, and then a new MotoGuzzi. Wonderful! Even the commute to work (Chilliwack to Surrey) is fun when you’re on TWO WHEELS!!
